On Saturday, I had the awesome opportunity to attend the True Colors Concert with Cyndi Lauper, Erasure, Deborah Harry and more. Sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign and the Matthew Shepherd Foundation, the True Colors concert is advocating the passage of the The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act/Matthew Shepard Act. We passed out over a 2,500 postcards Saturday night and urged everyone attending to call their Senators.
True to the belief that music can change the world, Cyndi decided to put together this tour to raise awareness of this critical and often overlooked issue. It was a great night for a great cause.
Almost 10 years ago, Matthew Shepherd was brutally murdered simply because he was gay. Hate in any form should never be tolerated. Hate expressed with violence and physical harm to others must be eradicated.
Of course, with all rational and good legislation, the Religious Right has started up their machine saying that the bill would criminalize religious preachers who denounce homosexuality from the pulpit. It's a laughable argument at most because if one actually reads the bill, they would see that the bill only covers physical violence.
The big lie propaganda machine spews forth its rhetoric--again.
This issue should be of importance to everyone as we all identify with one of the groups who would be protected under this law. If you haven't done so already, call your Senators and urge them to vote yes on this bill.
Each and everyone of us must do whatever we can to erase hate.
